Halloween under the sun

Since we've been here, I've been totally unaware that it's fall! Since my summer in Alaska was cold and lacking sun and lots of ice-cream, I feel like we've seriously been making up for it here and that this is our summer!! When I look at our friend Patrick's blog and see that Kodiak is starting to be covered in snow, I'm shocked!

Today is Halloween and instead of drinking apple cider or hot cocoa, I'm sipping on an icy smoothie...and wearing as little clothes as a possibly can!

Life is good!

What do you want to see?

a rainbow eucalyptus tree, hard to believe something so colorful can be real

Here is Dave scaring some cows. Why would I put on a photo of Dave and cows you might ask? Because I prefer to only put up a few specific pictures that I feel are really nice quality or tell a story that I feel is important. But I realize some people just like cows. Like my farmer friends. And the whole point of this blog was so I wouldn't be such a control freak over the content. So I openly ask: what would you like to see??? Leave a comment and I will try to make it so. (though I will ignore you if you don't tell me who you are, or at least make up a good story about who it could be- for example: Who could say no to Barack Obama!).

A sweet finish to a hard day's work...

coconut+machete+hollow plant stem= happy thomas

Wow!! I'm happy to finally have a big chunk of free time to write on here! It's not as if life out here is super busy or stressful, but there seems to always be something going on (and distracting me). For those of you who don't know or haven't figured it our yet, Thomas and I are working on an organic farm on Maui. We've been here since Oct. 1st and have enjoyed warm and sunny weather ever since we stepped off the plane. What a change after Kodiak!! By our photos, you've been able to see what our work and play days look like. So yeah, we make beds, plant, weed, trim, thin, tuck, etc. and get to harvest some of these delicious veggies on fridays. We then sell this produce to local organic grocery stores and restaurants. Our time here has been such an amazing experience! I mean, since we get to grow EVERYTHING in this climate, we're gaining great knowledge that we'll be able to use wherever we live.

2 of my favorite things about being here are: being able to pick wild fruit from trees (bananas, guavas, avocados, coconuts, oranges, starfruits, etc) and being surrounded by such amazingly beautiful and deliciously smelling wild flowers. I love making colorful bouquets for our small room, it adds so much life!! Oh, and did I mention that I love never being cold (those of you who know me well can understand :) )

During our free time, we enjoy exploring the island w/ friends. We still have much to discover, but we've already been able to see and experience many new places. I still run a lot here, but have also started swimming quite a bit in our awesome outdoor pool. Thomas has been teaching me new tricks and techniques to ameliorate my swimming...such as not swimming w/ my fingers spread out (haha, the photo below is proof that I'm still working on it!)

I'll try to blog more frequently. This is new to me so I'm not used to thinking about it (ok, I know I'm making up excuses). But I'll really try. And I also have to write in 2 languages...so more work for me : ) !!

Rose

Happy birthday Tomas

View from the back of the truck- wind/kite surfers on the way to Paia.

On my birthday, we all piled in Francesco's truck and went to the beach at Lahaina-and Rose and I got to try surfing. Sitting out in the warm water, watching the waves coming, soaking in the moment, the sun set, good friends, finally some fresh ahi enchiladas, and a chilling ride home with a clear starry sky above- very nice.

and a surprise birthday cake when I got home- chocolate raspberry, all organic goodness!

pool party

This is our swimming pool- salty, sixty ft. and chemical free!

I'm trying to teach Rose to swim without spreading her fingers (I will probably get in trouble for pointing this out to you, but hey, Rose doesn't write on the blog anyway! Stupid facebook.)

Ravioli night

Last night, our Italian friend Francesco taught us to make ravioli from scratch, along with pesto, a walnut sauce, fish sauce and chili sauce, while we romanced to the sounds of opera.

Then we had a family meal, ate, rejoiced, and enjoyed good company.
