Hmmm...

To the... redwoods?

At about 6000 ft. on the Haleakala Crater, there is a small grove of redwoods. So our fearless and knowledgeable tour guide Rose, with her book of facts, led us into the forest.

After the first 0.8 miles, we stopped for a much needed rest and lunch. Whoo... (kidding)

Pretty straight.

Peek-a-boo, Jenstar. We see you!

Sunday

Huge swells were coming in from the north, only the good surfers are playing...

We drove up for a hike and passed some hanggliders (we are at about 6000 ft.) Notice you can see the narrow part of Maui- with the ocean on each side.

Cold and wet

Poor Jenstar didn't even have a raincoat- we were all soaked, shivering and exhausted.

While Rose and Jess hitchhiked up to get the car, Matt, Jenstar and I all huddled in the rain, finally giving in and having an outhouse party. I told Matt to poop in the rubbish bin so we could huddle over the warmth, but he had stagefright.

Back in the car, racing to the summit (above the rain clouds), and there we found an incredible sunset. You can tell by my stupid face that I am pretty happy about that coloring.

"Crater love...

...It's driving me mad, making me crazy, crazy..."

Notice the grey clouds replacing the blue sky?

=Rain and wind storm surprise! With six miles until the end of the trail.

Hiking into the cold wind, rain, and fog. For a moment I thought I was back in Kodiak... except that it looks like the moon.

Rainbows were everywhere

christmas time in the crater

"Silversword, silversword... it's christmas time in the crater..."

"Ding-a-ling... Ding-a-ling"

the trip wouldn't be complete without... the standard group photo!

Back to the Crater

Matt, Jessica, Jenstar, Rose and I rented a car for our last weekend in Maui, and on Saturday, went up to the Haleakala Crater for one last adventure.

Grandpa returned for this trip, and brought along a new friend, grannystar.

This bag of potato chips was super tight after we brought it up to 10,000 ft. Of course I had to try opening it by popping it- which took all my strength- and then left chips spread throughout the rental car (which we kept finding for days afterwards...)

Thanksgiving Feast Continues...

The buffet

Jenstar claims the leg (which looks like the leg of a large beast)

My plate...mmm...

Thanksgiving Feast!!

Okay, I am in Belgium now, and I finally have a good internet connection to upload the final photos from our time in Hawaii (and there are a lot). Here we go, beginning with Thanksgiving and continuing...

With a few new friends/farmers who arrived, we now had a large enough minority of meat-eaters, and we successfully lobbied for a turkey- which Jenstar cooked to perfection.

fresh from the oven...

Ian couldn't wait to carve it (and sample it, over and over (and over))

Little Beach

Borrowing David's car- the exhaust pipe was dragging and wouldn't be tied back up, so the only solution was to rip off the back half piece of pipe and put it in the trunk- where the muffler has been living for some time. At least they are reunited...

the day we returned the car was a sad day...

Rose on the resort beach in the morning- went for a swim and found red warning flags up, but couldn't figure out what was dangerous. Where we camped during the night, there had been signs up reading: Warning!! Shark bites have occurred on this beach. Beware of Sharks!!! In the middle of the night Rose woke me up and we had to move the tent because the tide was coming in and the tent was about to go swimming and the sharks were about to eat us in the tent. Matt and Jessica aren't in the picture here because they went to use the hottub at the Westin, ha.

Next we went to see some petroglyphs east of Lahaina. Rose was really happy, as you can imagine. They were a little different than the ones in Kodiak.

Finally, we went to a beach in Paia and played in the waves, then returned home. Matt and I returned the car to Kahului and hitched home with several interesting folks. I am still tired.

Someday I'll be saturday night...

After a walk and some sandwiches on a nice quiet beach, watching surfers and finding beach treasure...

We decided to head for the big town- Lahaina! After visiting the Maui Brewing Company, we headed for the Westin resort villas. We wandered around inside, checked the pool, went to the beach, then asked to see a room but the displays were closed. That's when we realized that it was villas and not a hotel. oops.

So we went onward into town. We parked, and heard drums and excitement, so we headed for the music. It stopped and we noticed a horde of tourists, all wearing wreaths of flowers streaming out of a pavilion. Rose lead the way and we charged against the flow, and inside found the party over. I grabbed some flowers and we donned our disguises, and lo and behold, discovered plates of leftover desserts galore! We should take our picture, I said, and then a man in palm leaves offered to do so. "Why not in front of Tiki?" he asked, and we the happy tourists obliged.

on the other side of the luao, we found more desserts and nice juices. Cheers, mates! To our double honeymoon!

Then on into town for some dinner, still in our disguises. I could tell we were earning respect everywhere we went. Look at this guy- in hawaii, yeah, pina colada, hula, yeah.
