The Big Island

After we left Maui, we spent a week on the big island of Hawaii, making a slow circle around the whole island.

We spent our first night on an organic coffee farm near Kona, and as a work exchange for food (and of course, coffee in the am) and the sweet sleeping quarters (an old rv camper- we got the bed that is above the driving area= sweet!) we picked coffee cherries the following day.

Ripe coffee is dark red

Picking by hand takes a long time

and makes some people a little crazy

the bag of cherries- next the beans are removed with a pulper, and then they are dried and eventually roasted. This farm won an award for the best organic Kona coffee of the year- 2008!

Rose decided to dress this day as a pirate.

Later, we caught the sunset,

and headed to Margo's Corner.

This is a neat place to stay- a bed and breakfast, but we were allowed to camp in the yard. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a cheap and friendly place to stay on the south end- she (Margo) is open to work exchanges too. A great library (I read a book about worms), and then a home style breakfast and chatting in the morning. Not to mention it is also a health food store, and look at the paint job!
