Sea turtles

Monday night a few friends and I had the incredible chance to go spend a night on a beach under full moonlight, watching a hawksbill sea turtle nest, waiting for baby turtles to hatch, dig out of the sand, and find their way to the ocean. Along with a local biologist, our job was to watch for hatching turtles, smooth the sand so they wouldn't get stuck in footprints, etc. and watch for predators until they were swallowed by the breaking seas. There is something magical about observing the tiny turtle emerge and immediately beeline to the sea, just born knowing exactly what to do. We watched in hushed awe, and when the waves finally pulled them out of sight, we released sighs and cheers, celebrating the chance that was just created.

Then we slept on the sand, watched the moonset, and woke to swim naked in the morning-warm sea.
